The Review

*Keep in mind that I have not seen the Japanese Version of this! This review is not a comparison, it’s for the Korean Version only!!*

The Good

A Romance You Could Believe In

I really liked Kim Jae Won and Han Seo Yun’s relationship. Once he learned about her condition, he made it his mission to make every single day the best day she could possibly have. I thought the concept behind their relationship was handled really well, and I can completely understand why this movie left so many people in tears.

What made it even better was that we actually watched them fall in love. We weren’t just told they had feelings for each other. We saw those feelings slowly grow. You’d think that would be the bare minimum for a romance, but surprisingly, it isn’t. So many dramas and movies seem to think, “The leads must date,” idea is enough and skip over all the moments that actually make you believe in the relationship. This movie didn’t. It let us watch them enjoy each other’s company, learn about one another, and slowly fall.

That’s also why the emotional moments worked so well. Even when Seo Yun forgot everything, her feelings naturally found their way back because we had already seen the foundation of their relationship. It didn’t feel forced or convenient. It felt earned.

Well done, directors.

You managed to do something that a surprising number of romance dramas and movies still struggle to pull off.

(Also… did anyone else think Jae Won and Seo Yun looked like siblings? I saw their photoshoot before watching the movie and genuinely thought they were playing brother and sister.)

A Message Worth Remembering

If you read my recent review of Boyfriend on Demand (review here!), then you’ll know I love a drama or movie that has a meaningful message, especially when it’s naturally woven into the story instead of being forced onto the audience.

I think the biggest takeaway here is simple: don’t take life for granted.

I could go down the whole “someone always has it worse” conversation, but I honestly don’t like that mindset. It usually just ends up invalidating people’s very real feelings because there will always be someone worse off. Instead, I think this movie encourages us to live each day as fully as we can and to treat the people around us with kindness. Like Jae Won, you never really know what someone is carrying behind the scenes or whether today might be the last chance you get to make a memory with them.

What I also appreciated was that Jae Won ended up following his own advice. While trying to give Seo Yun the best days possible, he slowly started living his own life more fully too. The movie never outright says it, but at the beginning it doesn’t even seem like he has many friends. Watching him gradually surround himself with people and enjoy life made his journey even more meaningful.

If this movie teaches us anything, it’s that nothing lasts forever. So while you’re in your current season of life, make the most of it. Create memories, cherish the people around you, and live in a way that leaves as few regrets as possible.

A Title That Hits Twice

This is another movie with a title that works, and I’m here for it. If you’ve read my reviews for Youth of May (review here) or Moon in the Day (review here!), you know I love when a drama or movie has a meaningful title. Even If This Love Disappears Tonight is basically perfect. It’s poetic, emotional, and hits even harder once you finish the movie. Romance films do this often, and I love that they do. It’s a small detail, but it’s the kind of detail that makes the entire movie linger in your mind long after the credits roll.

Friendship Goals

I didn’t grow up with a friend group (or friends in general 🥲), so whenever I watch one on screen, it’s always a little bittersweet. There’s something so nice about watching a group of friends laugh, tease each other, and genuinely enjoy being together. It’s like getting to live through them for a couple of hours. Even if I had nothing else to praise about this movie, I could easily praise the friend group. They were wholesome, entertaining, and honestly just made me smile.

The Bad

It Needed More Time

I think the biggest issue with this movie was simply its runtime. At only an hour and forty-five minutes, there just wasn’t enough time to fully invest in the story or the characters. It makes sense that Jae Won’s death felt so sudden because the movie never had enough breathing room to slowly show his condition getting worse. We didn’t even know he had a heart problem until the scene right before he died.

I meant it when I said earlier that there were plenty of things to enjoy here. The romance, the friend group, and the message all made the runtime worthwhile. But when you’re building toward something as emotionally significant as the main character’s death, you can’t rush it. There needed to be moments sprinkled throughout the movie showing his health slowly declining so the ending felt inevitable rather than unexpected.

The movie reminded me a little of Love Untangled (review here!) and even, to a certain extent, Twenty-Five Twenty-One (review here!) or When I Fly Towards You. For most of the runtime, it’s simply teenagers laughing, hanging out, and enjoying life together. There isn’t really a villain or a major source of conflict, and that’s perfectly fine. The problem is that the movie focused so heavily on Seo Yun, when it suddenly switched to Jae Won’s illness, there was nothing to emotionally latch onto.

I was sad when Jae Won died, but it wasn’t really because of Jae Won himself. It was because of the people he left behind and their reactions. We’d spent almost the entire movie watching him act like a perfectly healthy teenager who just happened to struggle with running, so there wasn’t enough time to emotionally connect with what he was actually going through. It was a good movie, but it couldn’t leave the impression it wanted because it didn’t give us enough time to care. Kind of like The Silenced (review here!) and Way Back Love (review here!), it simply needed more room to breathe.

Too Quiet for Its Own Good

I genuinely liked Jae Won and Seo Yun’s relationship, and I thought the friend group was incredibly wholesome. But outside of those two things, I have to admit the movie was a little… boring.

Without some kind of driving force carrying the story, the movie mostly became a collection of teenagers hanging out together. Had we known from the beginning that Jae Won was slowly dying, that would’ve become the emotional thread connecting every scene. Every laugh, every joke, and every happy memory would’ve carried an extra layer of sadness because we would’ve known there was an invisible countdown ticking in the background.

That’s one of the reasons I loved Twenty-Five Twenty-One (here!). Yes, we spent plenty of time watching friends laugh and enjoy life together, but there was always sport, competition, and personal conflict pushing the story forward. The friendships were only one piece of a much larger picture.

This movie leaned almost entirely on watching teenagers have fun, and while I enjoyed those moments, they weren’t quite enough to carry the entire story. Thankfully, the shorter runtime stopped it from overstaying its welcome, but there were definitely moments where the pace started to drag.

The Twist We Didn’t Earn

I touched on this above, but I think it deserves its own section because it really was my biggest disappointment.

Jae Won’s death didn’t break my heart because it came out of nowhere.

Throughout almost the entire movie, he’s just a normal teenager trying to help the girl he loves enjoy every day to the fullest. Outside of the one scene where he can’t run after the bus, there’s almost nothing suggesting that something is seriously wrong. Then, during the final fifteen minutes, he suddenly tells us he’s terminally ill… and dies almost immediately afterward.

That’s not enough time.

I didn’t have the emotional connection needed for that moment to completely devastate me. It was sad because death is naturally sad, not because I felt like I was losing someone I’d been quietly watching disappear throughout the movie. If anything, I found myself feeling worse for his father, who had already lost his wife and was now losing his son too.

Movies only have so much time to tell a story so they don’t have the luxury of long build-ups. That’s exactly why every scene matters. His illness needed to be quietly woven throughout the film instead of being saved until the very end. I’ll talk more about that in What I Would Do, but the movie would’ve been so much more powerful if we’d slowly watched his condition worsen alongside his relationship with Seo Yun.

What I Would Do

Let the Countdown Begin

This is a given, but Jae Won’s illness being revealed seconds before he died completely ruined the emotional impact his death could’ve had. Instead, I’d make sure we knew about it from the beginning. The movie could open with his doctor reassuring him that everything looks fine and there’s nothing to worry about. Relieved, he finally lets himself enjoy life. He makes friends, falls in love with Seo Yun, and starts planning for a future he never thought he’d have. Then, halfway through the movie, everything changes. He collapses. Another hospital visit reveals that his condition has suddenly worsened and that any day could be his last. Think Mr. Plankton (review here!)— that quiet dread, that slow decline, that “I’m running out of time” heaviness. One moment life is finally beginning, and the next it’s slipping through his fingers.

That changes every scene that follows. Every trip with his friends, every date with Seo Yun, every ordinary conversation suddenly matters because it could be the last one. Maybe he starts writing letters or keeping a journal for Seo Yun to read after he’s gone. Maybe he tries to distance himself because he thinks it’ll hurt her less, only to realise he’s wasting the little time he has left. Whatever he chooses, we’d see the weight of it — the pretending, the fear, the private breakdowns.

One of my favourite details in the original was Seo Yun struggling to fall asleep because she loved her days so much that she didn’t want them to end. I’d mirror that with Jae Won. Except his reason would be heartbreaking. He wouldn’t be afraid of tomorrow because of school or exams. He’d be afraid that tomorrow might never come. Every night he’d wonder if this was the last time he’d close his eyes, making every sunrise feel like a gift he wasn’t guaranteed.

That way, when his death finally arrives, it wouldn’t feel like a twist thrown in for shock value. We’d have been dreading it from the moment his diagnosis changed. We’d mourn with Seo Yun instead of simply watching her mourn. That’s the difference. The ending with her forgetting him can stay exactly the same, but the journey to get there needed more time to breathe.

A Title Worth Saying

“Even If This Love Disappears Tonight” is such a beautiful title. If you’ve read my reviews on Youth of May (here!) or Moon in the Day (here!), you’ll already know I have a soft spot for titles that actually mean something within the story. This movie already has one of the best romance titles I’ve come across, so I couldn’t help wishing they’d taken it one step further.

At the beginning of the movie, I’d have Jae Won narrate, “Even if this love disappears tonight…” Then I’d leave the sentence unfinished. At the very end, while Seo Yun sits on the hill remembering him, she’d quietly finish it: “…I’ll love you again tomorrow.” Or even better, she’d say the entire line herself: “Even if this love disappears tonight, I’ll love you again tomorrow.”

It’d be such a simple moment, but it’d tie the entire story together beautifully. I’m a sucker for full-circle endings, and this would’ve been one of those scenes that sticks with you long after the credits roll.

*Funny enough, after writing this section I looked at the promotional poster and realised “I’ll love you again tomorrow” is already written on it. I genuinely hadn’t noticed before writing this! Apparently the movie and I had the exact same idea… they just forgot to actually put it in the movie.*

Final Thoughts

In the end, for a movie that’s less than two hours long, this movie wasn’t that bad. It was a cute movie about first love and friendship, so I definitely wouldn’t consider it a waste of time. However, I still stand by the fact that it didn’t spend enough time investing us in the characters for the ending to hit as hard as it should’ve. For a movie marketed around a guy whose heart condition is slowly worsening, it did very little to actually weave that struggle into the story. Not to mention the lack of direction. With the characters mostly just living life and having fun, it never felt like we were actually building toward anything. That’s why Jae Won’s condition needed more presence throughout the movie. It needed to feel inevitable rather than sudden. Instead, it almost felt like the writers forgot he was supposed to die and, rather than rewriting the story to support that ending, simply attached it to the final fifteen minutes. The result is a movie that’s heartbreaking on paper, but surprisingly random in execution.

Even so, I can’t say I disliked it. The romance was sweet, the friend group was genuinely lovable, and the message about making the most of the time you have is one that’s hard to argue with. It may not have completely broken my heart the way it wanted to, but it definitely leaves behind a soft little echo — like a memory that slips away but somehow still lingers, washing up again like a wave that refuses to go back into the ocean.

And we’re done. This has been sitting in my drafts undone for months now. I don’t know why I took so long to write this because I genuinely enjoyed writing this. Also, this is one of the shortest review I’ve ever done! I feel like after the past few reviews have been very long, this can serve as a nice break/breather. It’s always movies that are short, which makes sense considering there’s only so much to review.

I originally wasn’t planning on releasing this review just yet but the one that was meant to come out today took longer than I expected. I was scared I wasn’t gonna finish it in time (because I wasn’t), so I decided to do this one instead. And I’m glad I did!

Anyways, next week I’ll be posting the long one that was meant to be posted this week, so get excited for another long review! Enjoy this short review because I’m not sure when it’ll ever be this short again. 🤭

See you next week! 💕
